  • Do steampunk goggles offer UV protection?

Most of our goggles are not labeled for UV protection. That said, the lenses are made of materials that block certain ranges of harmful rays, according to Wikipedia and other sources you may find online.

Welding Goggles: Most of our goggles are made from re-purposed welding goggles. A few of them still contain the original, dark lenses. These are actually two lenses per eye, sandwiched together. The outer lens is glass. The inner lens is a very dark, thin piece of plastic that is designed to filter out UV rays and also much visible light. Note that our goggles are not recommended for actual welding - they are sold as a costume accessory. You can read about welding goggles on Wikipedia.

Goggles With Colored Lenses: Most of our remaining goggles and sunglasses have lenses that are laser cut from a sheet of acrylic. Often, we will also keep the glass lens on the outside to help protect against scratching. According to Wikipedia, untreated acrylic blocks UV rays up to the 300nm range. This suggests that it does block the most harmful rays in the 260-275nm range naturally, without UV coating. Treated UV lenses will often block up to 400nm and probably offer the most protection. Please note that we do not make any claims whatsoever about any protective qualities of our goggles and sunglasses. We are a cosplay / costume accessory website and the items we sell are chosen or crafted for their aesthetics. You will need to do your own research if you want to use them for another purpose.

  • Are goggle lenses replaceable?

Yes, most of our goggles have lenses that are easily replaceable. You simply unscrew the lens cap on each eye, remove the lens and replace it with a new one. Most of our goggles take 50mm circular lenses and you may purchase them here. Some of our goggles with solid brass rims take 44mm lenses and these will be available for sale soon.

  • Do you offer prescription goggles and lenses?

Yes, we offer prescription lenses for most of our steampunk goggles. These are single-focus lenses. We do not currently offer bifocals or progressive lenses. Order prescription lenses here.

  • Do you make custom goggles?

Yes, we can make custom goggles for you. Pricing generally starts around $100-200 for a specialized pair of goggles. Contact us with a description of what you're looking for and we'll provide a price quote and estimated timeline.

  • Are steampunk sunglasses rated for UV protection?

Some of our sunglasses are labeled by the manufacturer as having a special UV coating, but many of our products do not have this certification. That said, the lenses are made of materials that do filter certain ranges of UV light, according to Wikipedia and other sources you may find online.

Most sunglasses we carry have acrylic lenses. According to Wikipedia, untreated acrylic blocks UV rays up to the 300nm range. This suggests that they do block the most harmful rays in the 260-275nm range naturally, without UV coating. Treated UV lenses will often block up to 400nm.
